Ladies Football Team Begin League Campaign

The newly formed John Lockes Ladies football team created their own piece of history at the weekend when they played their inaugural game in the joint Carlow/Kilkenny Football league. The opposition on Monday last was supplied by the Erins Own club in Castlecomer fresh from an u-17 title against Carlow opposition at the weekend. The Callan girls can be very proud of their efforts in what was their first competitive outing. Playing with the wind in the first half the Lockes girls had plenty of chances but a lack of experience and some hard luck combined to limit them to two points at the break a score matched by their opponents.
The new half saw Callan start well with an early goal from captain Jemma Komar in reply to an earlier brace of Comer points saw the callan girls a point ahead with 18 minutes left. Caroline Murphy extended the lead with an excellent score a few minutes later but from there to the finish Erins Own dominated proceedings and found the back of the Lockes net twice despite the best efforts of Keeper Erin Thomas. Comer triumphed on a 3-5 to 1-3 scoreline but the Callan team will face into the league in the knowledge that they will be competitive in their division.
