First club win this year!
Junior Football
The John Lockes club re entered the local football championship this year after a five year absence and their debut in the 2015 Junior league last Saturday, was a winning one with victory over the Railyard on a 1-8 to 1-3 scoreline. The game was full of honest endeavor from both sides and it was only in the last fifteen minutes when the Lockes lads opened up a comfortable lead to see them over the winning line. Many of the Callan team have won underage medals for football over the years and it was heartening to see players like Robbie Wall, Alan Costigan ,Darren O Dwyer and Owen Wall back wearing the jersey again as adults. Both teams played a decent brand of football in what was a most entertaining game. Railyard opened the scoring after 5 minutes but the Lockes reply was an exquisite goal from the very impressive Dan McCormack who volleyed to the net. Both teams traded points Callans' courtesy of Dan McCormack (2) again before Railyard scored a goal to draw level with five minutes left in the half. On the call of half time Robbie Wall who was gradually making a huge impact in the game floated over a beautiful point from 30 yards out to leave it 1-3 to 1-2 for Callan at the break.
The Lockes lost the services of Owen McGrath (who had been playing a great game) to injury for the new half and Alan Costigan took over the midfield role with Jim Power and they proved to play a pivotal role in linking the play between backs and forwards. Captain Bill McCormack with Shane Bergin and the mighty Paddy Kennedy repelled many Railyard attacks. Along with Eoghan Fahey, PJoKeeffe, Ruairi Kennedy and goalkeeper JJ Corrigan, they proved to be a very solid defensive unit restricting their opponents to a single point in the second half. Liam Kennedy ran himself to a standstill and tackled and harried at every opportunity while Martin O Connell and Darren o Dwyer did a lot of good work up front. Eoghan Kennedy raised a white flag for the Lockes when he came on as did Mark Shelly while Brian MacCann and Keith Doheny also made telling contributions when introduced. The final word went to Dan McCormack who soloed through for a marvelous point to finish the scoring on what was a very satisfying first competitive game for 2015.
Ladies Football
The John Lockes ladies football club will hold their A.G.M. in the club rooms on Saturday February 7th at 7.30pm. The club currently consists of just an adult ladies team but if there are people who could give of their time to develop an under age section it is certainly something which would be a welcome asset to the club and will be on the agenda on the night. The Lockes will play in the Carlow/Kilkenny Junior league again for 2015 and in the Kilkenny junior Championship. All current players and prospective new players are asked to attend the A.G.M. All are welcome.
