Club Notes for week commencing 23rd February 2015

Junior Football The Lockes football team did all that was asked of them on Saturday last in John Locke Park when defeating Windgap in the last round of the League on a 3-10 to 1-6 score line. The result means the local lads sit proudly on top of the table in their first year back competing in the grade since 2009 and the players are certainly enjoying the experience, as a curtain raiser to the season ahead. Windgap proved to be serious opposition and there was little between the teams in the opening half with a Dan McCormack (1-1) goal, being the difference between the sides at the break on a 1-5 to 0-5 score line. A feature of the campaign so far has been a strong second half showing by the Lockes lads and that proved to be the case on Saturday with huge performances from the likes of Owen McGrath (0-1), Robbie Wall (0-1), Jason Corcoran (1-1), Paddy Kennedy and Martin O Connell (1-3) to put the result beyond doubt by the 50th minute. Mitch Corrigan, his brother JJ. Ruairi Kennedy , PJ O Keeffe and Keith Doheny dealt with any threat that came their way and restricted their opponents to a solitary green flag in the second half,, while Colm Lyons, Owen Costigan (0-2), Brian McCann, substitute Mark Shelly (0-1) and team captain Bill McCormack all worked hard to ensure a victory in a must win game. The campaign so far has been very worthwhile and the lads certainly deserve to be involved in the latter stages of the league. Well done to all concerned and hopefully the lads will be involved in a league final or semi-final the next couple of weeks.

Ladies Football. The Lockes Ladies football team have recommenced training for the coming season and have also recruited a number of new players in the process. Having won the 11 a side Carlow /Kilkenny league in 2014 the ladies will celebrate that victory with a celebratory dinner in the Big Wheel on Friday 6th March kindly sponsored by Liam Glennon and this will be followed by a table quiz commencing at 9.30pm (as part of the limited amount of fundraising that the Ladies Football Club does during the year) and the medal presentation. A table of four costs €20 with raffle prizes on the night. The ladies would ask that anyone who can, would come to support them on the night and all are welcome to join in the celebration of their achievements for 2014.
